Crinkle & Stretchy Cotton Fabrics

Some fabrics are made; these are crafted. Most of the crinkle fabrics in this collection begin long before the loom: we twist our own cotton and linen yarns in-house, building the texture into the thread itself. Working this way with natural fibres takes time and skill, and only a handful of makers in the world still do it.

The twisted yarn is then woven using an age-old technique on traditional looms that have been at work for generations. It is slow, patient craft: our looms weave no more than 70 metres a week. The result is a cloth with a natural, lasting crinkle and a gentle stretch that no shortcut can imitate.

No two are alike. Every one of these fabrics develops a texture of its own. It is shaped by the amount of twist given to the yarn, by the weaving techniques passed down through the centuries in the Anatolian region where each master weaver lives, and by the weaver's own imagination. Why the narrower widths? Most of these fabrics come in narrower widths than industrial cloth, simply because our traditional looms weave them that way. The width is a signature of the loom, and a mark of how each metre is made.
